Growth and gratitude

We often become dissatisfied because we are not where we want to be in life or we do not have everything we want. This causes us to forget how far we have come. The journey to success is a long and crooked one. However, taking even a few steps closer to your goal, despite coming across hurdles, is a blessing in itself. Sometimes we get what we want so easily that we forget the previous state that we were in before, which makes us ungrateful.

If you were to plant apple seeds, your end goal would be to grow apples. However, the tree needs to grow first and this is a long process. Just because you do not immediately see the apples doesn’t mean you are not making progress towards your end goal. So many things may need to happen before you are able to see the product of your hard work. Reflecting on how far you have come is so important, as this will keep you motivated to carry on moving forward.

We usually show the least appreciation for things we obtain very easily or things that are constantly there. Taking what we have for granted may cause us to resent the things we have been blessed with because we are always wanting more. I am not saying that there is anything wrong with wanting better. Instead, my point is that you should not forget the blessings you have been given. Remember that whilst you are wishing for something more, somebody else is wishing for what you have. Stop and thank God, no matter how small the blessing may seem to you. When praying, sometimes we often just ask God for things and forget what he has given us, i.e. the gift of life. At times, we want something better so much that we risk all that we have been given to improve our lives. Learn to appreciate what you have, before it turns into what you had. Sometimes the very things we take for granted are the things we should have been grateful for.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns a meal into a feast. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow”.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate something is to realise that you might lose it someday. Be thankful and use your blessings as a reminder of what it is possible for you to achieve. Do not get complacent – you have been blessed with so much. Furthermore, do not forget how much progress you have made since planting that seed, even though it may take a long time to see the final product. We need to remember that all good things take time.

Always wish for more, but also be grateful for where you are. Also, thank God because someone out there is wishing for what you have, no matter how small it is. Some aspects of your life can always have better, but they can also be worse. Finally, reflect on the progress you have made and use it as motivation to better yourself.
